Theory of Writing

To me, writing is just like an adventure and exploration. It is sophisticated, yet it is an extraordinary system of communication that connects people’s thoughts and ideas. It is sophisticated because there are many places to explore and different paths you can take, every path grants you a different learning experience and outcome; just like minor changes in the vocabulary we use would carry a whole different feel to the readers. It is extraordinary because writing is an essential way of expressing our feelings, emotions, and convey messages to others. As a writer and as an explorer, my writing skills will develop as I mark down every place I explore in this world.

The element of diversity in writing is immeasurable; there’s countless way of delivering thoughts to someone through writing. Poetry is an excellent example of a genre that uses metrical language with rhythms to create imagery to the readers. It grants a closer touch to the message that the author’s trying to deliver in a coherent way. But unfortunately, English is my second language, and it took me a tremendous amount of effort to break through the obstacles of learning a new language. Back in my high school, the type of essay we were focusing on the most was argumentative essay. I was in shock when I heard that out of the four essays we are going to be writing in this class, and none is argumentative essay made me felt very nervous. But at the same time, when I know I’m going to learn something new that’s going to benefit me in the future, I feel more energized in putting efforts into the work.

R1: Sourced Based Essay

The first assignment for us was a Sourced-Based Essay. For this essay, we were mostly discussing the use of language. Then gather sources and information that will support your objective. My theme for the essay was cyberbullying. Therefore I immediately chose sources that will grant me a strong argument construction to why cyberbullying is such an issue to our world today, a world where technology is taking the spot. But I neglected the use of rhetorical elements like tone, purpose, genre, medium, stance, audiences, and author, which could’ve definitely brought my writing to another level. As I revise my essay and bring rhetorical elements inside the writing, I was able to deliver my message to the readers in a more clear and precise way to them.
Furthermore, I learned about rhetorical analysis. Rhetorical analysis is the process of evaluating and understanding the texts from a reading and how it is going to influence the audiences. This assignment won’t be complete without an understanding of rhetorical analysis since we are not really allowed to apply our ideas and language to support the argument but instead analyzing and using the sources from authors to support our argument.

R2: Inquiry-Based Essay

Inquiry-Based Essay is the second assignment for us, and it is the longest essay I’ve ever written in my life. But the good thing is I do feel fairly proud of myself after accomplishing it. For Inquiry-Based Essay, It is very essential to develop a question and topic first, so it will guide us in creating the essay’s structure and format. To me, source-based essays and inquiry-based essays are similar, but the most unique part of the inquiry-based essay is getting a more in-depth touch to different genres and how it can affect our writings. Also, we are allowed to put our own ideas and feelings into the essay. In my Inquiry-Based Essay, I further discussed my argument towards the issue of cyberbullying and the reasons for it. Because my topic was too broad, it was sort of difficult for me to choose the question I want to discuss specifically about cyberbullying. But after reading the advises, I know I have to be more concise about my topic and pick a more develop question that I can expand on.

R3: Composition In Two Genres
After the two toughest assignment of the class, It finally comes down to something more relaxing and entertaining to do, which is the composition in two genres. Composition in Two Genres allows you to choose your own genres to write about and expand your creativity and interest in it. In this assignment, we are permitted to convey our expression and ideas to the readers fully. I’m able to target a specific group of audiences and deliver the message of my own. From the learning experiences of previous assignments, I get the ideas on the type of genres I should pick based on my topics. As well as the rhetorical elements that I learned to back up my paperwork. The genre I chose is magazine and journalism because my goal for this paper is to increase the awareness of the issue of cyberbullying. Magazine creates a more relaxing format for the readers to get into the project. Also, a positive attitude is the guide that leads to a positive life. It doesn’t matter whether you’re bully or being bully, in this case, positivity will always be the thing that brings you out of that circle, and bring a brighter side of life to us. A positive environment is going to benefit everyone in every aspect of life; it allows us to avoid and overcome the worries and negative things in life. While journalism provides serious facts towards the negative impact that cyberbullying can create, which balance out the mood and atmosphere of the writing.

To sum up, I’ve learned a lot from this class. There’s a significant improvement to my writing skills throughout the semester. Not only we learned how to write different types of essays, but we also learned rhetorical elements that allow us to write a more influential essay. Despite the struggle on writing these essays. I am very grateful that I learned how a suitable tone could tremendously impact your theme and the importance of connection with audiences as a writer.
